I like to tell myself that the reason why I love Disney so much is because I was deprived when I was younger. I didn’t grow up going to the happiest place on Earth. I grew up in the Philippines reading story books, watching Disney movies and dreaming what it’s like to be in Disneyland. My dream finally came true when I was 16 and now that I’m a young professional in my mid 20s, of course I had to be an Annual Passholder. My obsession with mermaids on the other hand, I don’t really have a justification why I love them so much or I never outgrew them. The Little Mermaid is obviously my favorite Disney Princess. Aside from her forever hair goals and amazing voice, I love her creativity, tenacity and strong willed personality. She doesn’t take “no” for an answer. She doesn’t just think about things but she makes things happen against all odds. Because of this, she became one of favorite cartoon characters growing up. I could relate with her in so many ways. Just like her, I don’t like being put in a box or going with the flow, being told what to do or cannot do, I like to be free, to be creative and to go in lots of adventures. This is just the beginning of my mermaid wardrobe. I will be designing and posting more mermaid inspired outfits, so stay tune! What do you think about mermaid fashion? Do you have a favorite Disney Princess and why?

Disneyland is one of my favorite places in the world and since I’ve been swamped with going to lots of events lately, I haven’t gotten a chance to use my annual pass. I told myself that I’m going to try to make sure to come more often and make my own outfits as well. Therefore, you’ll be seeing a few disney posts dressed up as few of my favorite characters for the upcoming months. So stay tuned!

I had to make my first disney outfit dedicated to none other than Minnie Mouse since it all started with a mouse! 😉 What do you guys think? I just made a simple circle skirt and a crop top with an elastic open back. If there are other characters you would like me to dress up as, definitely let me know.

Happy Tuesday and stay magical!

XOXO,

Joy

DIY: PRINCESS MINNIE EARS

As most of you already know that I’m a huge Disney fanatic and because of this I’ve been meaning to make customized minnie ears in a very long time and it’s not until now that I finally got a chance to do so. I made three princess ears for my girlfriends and I on our last Disneyland date and without any further ado, here’s how.

IMG_5898

You’ll need:

  • Mug
  • Cardboard paper
  • Foam
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Highlighter
  • Ruler
  • Headband
  • Fabrics
  • Glue Gun
  • Scissors

IMG_5827

  1. Trace around the mug that you pick on the cardboard paper. (the bigger the mug, the bigger your ears are)
  2. Cut two circles and label one A and label the other one B.

IMG_5828

3. Get a headband and place the circles where you want it to land on your headband.

IMG_5836

4. Trace around the headband on top of the circles and cut it.

IMG_5830

5. Now trace it on top of the felt and cut it.

IMG_5837

6. Grab the cardboard ears again and add 1/2″ for seam allowance. Label it with letters A & B and write “fabric” as well to remember that this is for your fabrics. It’s also important to stay consistent and not mix up your ears because they will sit on your headband weird if they do.

IMG_5831

7. Place them on top of the fabric of your choice. Pin them and cut around it.

IMG_5833

8. After cutting around the ears, flip the fabrics so they can face each other inside out and sew  within the 1/2″ seam allowance.

IMG_5834

9. After sewing both ears, flip them inside out and add the A&B cardboards, A&B felt and also add cotton balls if you want your ears to be poofy.

10. Okay, this is the part that i forgot to photograph. Sorry!

In order to make the base of your headband,

  • You have to make a pattern for it, so trace the headband and add 1/2″ seam allowance.
  • Fold the fabric, pin the headband pattern on top and cut around it.
  • Sew within the seam allowance and turn it inside out.
  • Slip the headband inside the base fabric and use the glue gun to finish the other side.

IMG_5841

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, we can now glue the ears to the headband! 🙂

IMG_5843

I was making a Cinderella Ears so i decided to add a trim lace around them. (Pretty much at this point, you can add anything you want and be as creative as you want to be.)

IMG_5844

For the bow, I used silver sequins to make it pop.You can make the bow as big as you want. You pretty much have to make a rectangle, fold it in half and sew the three ends 1/2″ inch.

IMG_5840

Once you sew the three ends, turn it inside out and hot glue the other side. After you have your full rectangle, cut a narrower rectangle and use it to wrap around the rectangle and hot glue for it to stay. When your bow is ready, glue it at the middle of ears. And now you’re done. You can now go to Disneyland and dance around with your new princess ears!

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial and is somewhat helpful!

The pier house

For the past seven months, I have been one of those people who take the pandemic very seriously and have tried my best not to go out or dine outside due to safety precautions. However, when I was invited by The Pier House to dine in their patio right in front of Venice Beach, I… Continue reading →
